Academy Award-winning British cinematographer Freddie Francis
passed away at the age of 89 in London last month. Francis was
known both for his work as a cinematographer and for his cult following among
horror-movie aficionados for his directorial work in the ‘60s and ‘70s.
After winning his first Academy Award for cinematography in
1960, he worked as a director of many horror genre films throughout the ‘60s and
‘70s. He later returned to cinematography in 1980 with “The Elephant Man,”
restarting a critically acclaimed career. He subsequently won his second Oscar
for “Glory” in 1989.
