Oscar-Winning Matte Artist and VFX innovator Peter Ellenshaw
passed away last month in his Santa
Barbara home, leaving behind an illustrious career as a
visual artist. Ellenshaw, known for his pioneering work on such films as "Mary
Poppins," "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" and "Darby O'Gill and the Little People," had
earned the official status of “Disney Legend” in 1993. Ellenshaw began his
career at Disney in 1947 when he was tapped to work on the studio’s first
live-action film, “Treasure Island.” He worked there
until retirement in 1979 after completion of “The Black Hole.”
Ellenshaw is survived by his two children, Lynda Ellenshaw
Thompson and Harrison Ellenshaw, who notably both work in the VFX field, and
two grandchildren, Michael and Hilary.
