Rear Screen Projection in Today’s Production World

The scene is a common one in older movies: actors bobbing along in a train or car while projected scenery whizzes behind them, creating the illusion that the actors are in a moving vehicle. The effect is often obvious, calling attention to itself. The process photography, or rear screen projection effect, is commonly associated with a bygone area of clunky special effects. But in today’s world of blue and green screen technology, the process photography method is still surprisingly common in modern productions.

Nosotros American Latino Film Festival Call for Entries

The Nosotros American Latino Film Festival, an event dedicated to showcasing the experiences of Latino-Americans in film, is currently accepting submissions. Entries must be postmarked by July 10 to meet the deadline, but late submissions will be accepted until July 31.  Applications are available online through the Nosotros official Web site. www.nosotros.org

7th Annual Golden Trailer Awards

The 7th Annual Golden Trailer Awards took place last month at the DGA in New York City. The show, judged by members of the film industry, is a yearly event that honors excellence in production of movie commercials. A downloadable list of winners is available through the Golden Trailer official site.

TBWA/California Opens Media Arts Lab

Advertising agency TBWA has announced the opening of its new building, re-named The Jay Chiat Building, dedicated to projects that focus on media arts. The building will be located half a block from the main TBWA\Chiat\Day building in Los Angeles.

“Media Arts is a philosophy that puts all the ways a brand connects at the center of what we do," says Lee Clow, Chairman & CCO TBWA Worldwide. “It requires a deep understanding of how audiences digest media and the various crafts we can use to tell brand stories."
