Film L.A. Inc. released a study last month that shows
significant reduction in the number of TV pilots produced in Los Angeles last year. The study,
which compares the number of pilots shot during the broadcast pilot season in
2006 with that of 2005, shows that pilot production has gone down from 105 shows
to 81, a decline of 23%. These figures come as the number of pilots produced in
other locations, such as New York
and Canada,
continues to grow.
Despite the drop, Los
Angeles pilot production continues to outweigh that of
other locations by far. However, Film L.A. President Steve MacDonald expressed
concern over the economic impact of the loss of pilots to other locations.
“Aggressive incentives from other jurisdictions have now succeeded in attracting
almost a third of the season’s pilot productions. Without a significant
response, we’re not likely to retain a majority share much
longer.”
