THIS ISSUE's SPOTLIGHT on:
"Cinematographers "
Issue Issue 31
March 2006

This issue of 411 Update sponsored by the Tucson Film Office

Photographing the Independent Vision
By Melinda McCrady

In this issue, 411 asked three cinematographers to discuss their recent work on independent films. Through these directors of photography, we learned how flexibility, personal experience, and communication play a role in the work of a DP. 411 saw how a dancer’s experience can enhance a DP’s craft or how cinematography can reflect a psychological state—from recreating a true incident involving a mentally ill artist to evoking the emotional condition of an epileptic man in deep despair.

New York 411 Hosts First-Ever Advisory Board Meeting

New York 411 held its first annual Advisory Board meeting at the W Hotel in Manhattan.

The primary goal of this invitation-only forum was to enable diverse members of the production community to discuss below-the-line production issues with each other as well as with New York 411. “The New York 411 Advisory Board is part of a continuing effort to create a sense of connection among community members and to keep 411’s finger on the pulse of what is happening today in the New York production world,” comments Kevin Davis, Group Publisher.

A Night of Visual Honors

The 4th Annual Visual Effects Society Awards were held on February 16th at the Hollywood Palladium in California. This year’s award ceremony honored nominees in 16 separate categories including Outstanding Compositing in a Motion Picture, Outstanding Models and Miniatures in a Motion Picture and Best Single Visual Effect of the Year.

Garnering a total of  three awards each, the big movie winners of the night were King Kong and War of the Worlds. “The extraordinary breadth and diversity of the awards were matched only by the extraordinary talent displayed in the room,” said Executive Director of the VES, Eric Roth. “It was an eye-popping, visual effects treat equivalent to a triple ice cream sundae with a dozen exotic toppings capped off with the biggest cherry ever.”
