411 Update December Edition Brought to you by Birns & Sawyer

Year-End Recap
By Melinda McCrady

At the close of the first full year of 411 Update, we invite you to share in a brief recap of the production world of 2005. Here at Resource 411, we find that profiling the unsung heroes of the below-the-line world makes for fascinating story subjects. Consider how filming a car chase scene can be a stunt in itself, or the difficulties of casting 14 international AIDS commercials in three weeks. Because the challenges continue to the post process, 411 Update has brought to you the subtly scary VFX  of The Ring II and explored how audio descriptions make programs accessible to the visually impaired. From an Emmy award-winning make-up artist to stock footage in the digital age, we’re pleased to document how the production community continues to find innovative ways of improving the industry.

In addition to these features, we’ve also kept you updated on news that affects the production community. 2005 saw runaway production as a recurrent news theme, with Connecticut and other states competing with foreign countries, as well as each other, to lure projects with incentive programs such as tax breaks and coordination assistance. California may be getting into the game, with an incentive bill that, although it was delayed because of initial backlash, is still alive and kicking for next year’s legislative session.

411 Publishing doesn’t just want to inform, we also want to be informed by the production community. Therefore, we’ve furthered our efforts to remain in tune with the industry by calling for advisory boards of below-the-line professionals to share their expertise. The First Annual Advisory Board was a success and, when your upcoming issue of LA 411 arrives, we hope you’ll agree that their suggestions have helped to make a better directory. In the coming year we hope to do the same with the New York Advisory Board, which is just around the corner.

Another way we’ve found to stay connected is through our Around Town section, where we update on the significant happenings of our listees. Location changes, product releases and other happenings of interest to the rest of the community go here. So if you or your company has news to share then don’t hesitate to tell us. We and the rest of the below-the-line community would like to know.

We look forward to serving your production information needs in the coming year, and hope you have a prosperous 2006. And lastly, on behalf of all of us here at 411 Publishing, happy holidays and best wishes for the New Year!
