Bridging International AIDS Awareness Gaps Through Commercial Production

Casting Director Melissa Abesera of Abesera Casting thought that comedic casting—finding that one person with the perfect timing—was her greatest casting strength. But after casting 14 spots for MTV in collaboration with the Staying Alive AIDS awareness program, Abesera finds herself rethinking those strengths.

 



     
Full Steam Ahead for California Production

In an effort to highlight the extent to which runaway production negatively affects California’s economy as a whole, the California Film Commission recently released the results from a study conducted by the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC).

Around Town

Another Point Scored for Blu-ray
According to Variety, Lions Gate recently became the fourth studio to endorse the Blu-ray high def disc format after Disney, Fox and Sony. The rival HD DVD format has been backed by Warner Bros., Paramount and the Universal Films. Debates still continue as to which format will dominate.

Visual Effects Honors from The Hollywood Film Festival
The Hollywood Film Festival's Board of Advisors announced that that this year's festival will honor Warner Bros.' "Batman Begins" with the "Hollywood Sound of the Year Award," Disney's "Howl's Moving Castle" with the "Hollywood Animation of the Year Award," Dimension's "Sin City" with the "Hollywood Make-Up of the Year Award," and Paramount's "War of the Worlds" with its "Hollywood Visual Effects of the Year Award." The Hollywood Awards Gala ceremony will be held on October 24th at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

     
 

 
Los Angeles International Short Film Festival
