Fighting Runaway Production California Style
By Miranda Taylor

Since film, television and commercial production peaked in California in 1996, the golden state has yet been able to bring back those glory days. When Governor Schwarzenegger stepped into Gray Davis’ shoes in October 2003, hopes were high in the industry that the former action star would remember his roots and make reeling in runaway production a top priority.

CGI Commercial Comedy

Maybe you’ve seen the spots: a young boy builds a robot for a science project. The boy introduces the robot to his parents and as the robot waves, the parents look at each other, beaming with pride over their son’s creation. In the next moment, chaos ensues as the robot turns nasty, shooting laser beams from his eyes causing fiery explosions throughout the garage and finally blowing up the family car.

Connecticut Film Division

As many states work hard to keep production domestically-based, Connecticut’s Film Division of the Connecticut Commission on Culture & Tourism seems to be doing something very right in their fight against runaway production. In the past couple of months alone, films such as “Family Stone,” starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Luke Wilson wrapped location shooting as well as the much-anticipated remake of H.G. Wells’ “War of the Worlds,” directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Cruise. MTV stopped by to shoot a special honoring the release of 50 Cent’s latest album, and the recently aired reality series “Wickedly Perfect” was shot in Fairfield County, CT.

One of many varied locations film-friendly Connecticut has to offer.
