    "Alice" Gets Some New Clothes

    From a headless horseman to a mad hatter, from an angora-clad director to a uniformed ape, Colleen Atwood has sized them all up. The Oscar-winning costume designer ("Memoirs of a Geisha," "Chicago") has been a frequent collaborator with director Tim Burton on movies ranging from period costumes ("Sleepy Hollow") to science fiction ("Planet of the Apes"). Her latest collaboration with Burton can be seen in the fantasy stylings of "Alice in Wonderland."

    Prior to presenting Rob Reiner with the Golden Eddie Award, actor Christopher Guest reflected on working with the famed writer/producer/director/actor. “We’ve laughed together, we’ve cried together. Well, he cried mostly.” After a rousing standing ovation, Reiner declared he was honored to receive such a fine award. He paid special recognition to his long time editor and collaborator Robert Leighton. “I’ve spent more time with him in a dark room than with my wife,” joked Reiner.

    "Contemporary is so challenging, a lot of costume designers believe it’s the hardest, and I feel there’s a good argument to be made for that because we all have such sensitive eyes to the contemporary aesthetic, so if anything is wrong, if anything is inaccurate, we can tell immediately," said Danny Glicker ("Up in the Air")

    The highlights during the evening’s presentations came with each honorary recipient. Michael Negrin, ASC, presented his father, Sol Negrin, with the ASC Presidents Award. The younger Negrin remarked, “Unlike a lot of my friends’dads, my father always came home from work with a smile on his face.”

    “Avatar” won six VES awards including the evening’s top prize, “Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects Driven Feature Motion Picture. Writer/Director/Editor James Cameron was on hand to not only support his visual effects team but also to receive the evening’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Cameron began his film career as a visual effects artist, studying under mentor Stan Winston. When Cameron approached Winston for advice on making “Avatar,” Winston told him not to hold back but to let the film be his visual calling card.

    Although "Avatar" has a limited amount of live action sequences, Mauro Fiore's Cinematography received the Oscar. Backstage, Fiore is asked about his perspective on being honored for a film that used so many different tools to craft the film's images.
